Abstract : This report describes the oceanographic portion of a survey conducted in The Aegean Sea during December 1965 and early January 1966. The survey was performed to obtain a general knowledge of the ocean environment in that area. U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office personnel collected temperature, salinity, bottom sediment, and current data throughout the Aegean Sea from the USS SHELDRAKE (AGS-19). A cursory analysis of these data shows cooler, less-saline surface waters in the northern part of the Aegean Sea than in the southern Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. No significant variations are in evidence in the water column below the surface layer. The sound channel axis is relatively stable at 200 - 300 meters throughout the survey area. Cross sections of vertical distribution of temperatures, salinities, and sound velocities illustrate the water masses present in the Aegean Sea. (Author)
