Abstract : Extensive theoretical and preliminary experimental studies were undertaken to identify efficient coupling methods to the magnetostatic modes used in the traveling wave limiter in order to reduce the insertion loss while maintaining broad bandwidth. The theory of magnetostatic wave propagation has been extended and is presented in detail for an axially-magnetized, long ferrimagnetic cylinder surrounded by metal walls, and for a rectangular, shielded sample with transverse magnetization. As a result of the theoretical analysis one of the possible approaches to obtain broadband limiting with low insertion loss is to excite only the lowest-order surface mode with broadband matching circuits. Theoretical considerations show that a bandwidth well over an octave can be expected. Results of the preliminary experiments using strontium titanate as a coupling circuit are presented. (Author)
