Abstract : The Service Test of the Cupola, XM30, with Machine Guns, 7.62MM: Fixed, M73 was conducted by the US Army Armor and Engineer Board at Fort Knox, Kentucky during the period August-October 1966. The purpose of the test was to determine the suitability of the XM30 Commander's Station with M73 Machine Guns for US Army use. The XM30 was mounted on an XM734 facility vehicle. The vehicle was operated for 2,666 miles during which 20,000 rounds of 7.62MM ammunition were fired. Eleven deficiencies and 13 shortcomings were found. Three of the deficiencies were considered to be safety hazards: With the machineguns at maximum depression, portions of the top deck were in the line of fire; the machineguns would not remain in an elevated position when the vehicle was traveling; the elevation drive pin fell out; and the cupola hatch cover lock would not retain the hatch cover in an open position during vehicle operation. Two deficiencies concerned component interference with cupola traverse: The traverse gearbox struck the cupola power lead, and there was mutual interference between the communications control box and the spent ammunition brass box. One failure occurred, the electrical power wire to the elevation control handle broke and the elevation drive pin fell out twice. Technical publications, repair parts, and a special lifting sling were not provided with the test item.
