Abstract : This report describes the hardware and software developed for the Strategic Air Command Visual Analysis Subsystem (SAC/VAS). The subsystem was developed for the purpose of automating the establishment, maintenance, and querying of a large data base. The subsystem uses a medium-scale computer as a message-switching and data processing device. The computer services operator requests from six stored-program display and control consoles, retrieves and manipulates data from mass storage devices, and provides the data to the requesting console. The display console operator edits the data as required and returns it to mass storage for later reference. The subsystem also provides various other standard peripheral devices which are required for a data processing system, such as a card reader, a card punch, and several printers. It also provides communications with another data processing system through a special interface unit. The major hardware development required was the AN/FYQ-37 display console. In addition, an interface unit was developed to provide intercommunication of the mass storage devices and the internal and external data processing systems. Software systems were also developed for system operation and maintenance. The SAC/VAS system is now fully implemented and operationally successful. A continuing program of hardware and software improvements for the SAC/VAS and similar systems is also described. (Author)
