Abstract : This volume represents a summary of the study of Spaceborne Software Systems conducted by the System Development Corporation between September 1965 and December 1966. The aims of the study are outlined, and the major conclusions, including a characterization of spaceborne software and a comparison with general-purpose data processing are presented. The critical problems in spaceborne software are identified and recommendations for solutions are described. These recommendations include an analysis of the need for a common programming language and a recommendation for the adoption of a Space Programming Language (SPL). Also included are summaries of the other three volumes of the final report of the Spaceborne Software Systems Study. (Author)
