Abstract : This report describes the results of a year-long research study into optimum tapped-delay-line techniques for improvement of signal resolution, with particular application to radar resolution enhancement. The mathematical design problem reduces to one in linear programming for the coherent signal case, and one in nonlinear convex programming for the incoherent. A solution algorithm is devised for both cases which, in the linear problem, yields solutions of .001 percent accuracy more rapidly than Simplex. The principal result of the study is that, while resolution and sidelobe level improvement can be achieved to nearly any desired degree, the associated cost in terms of noise sensitivity is so great as to preclude a useful practical realization. Other areas within the antenna context to which the general method may be applied with more fruitful results are indicated. (Author)
