Abstract : Efforts concern the design of future airborne obstacle avoidance equipment for use in Army aircraft under tactical conditions. A detailed study of the radar returns from cables at millimeter wavelengths is continued with the inclusion of realistic antenna patterns. A method for enhancing and magnifying short range displays has been developed and has been incorporated into the millimeter radar. A depressed center PPI capable of starting ranges as short as 0.5 microseconds is now available and is described in detail. The experimental program has been emphasized in this quarter with the implementation of the frequency pulling scheme based on the Reike diagram of the magnetron (see ECOM-02125-1). The variable ferrite phase shifter used to introduce the VSWR has been studied in detail and response characteristics for the device are presented. Standing wave patterns were produced at the magnetron, and the patterns correlated with those theoretically predicted. A series of experiments utilizing frequency agility have been run against a wire obstacle. A comparison of the lobing returns with and without agility is presented. Instrumentation to measure frequency deviations around 70 GHz has been developed and is described in detail.
