Abstract : The purpose of this project was to develop fabrication methods for producing hollow balls to be used for bearing exploratory work by the Air Force. This was accomplished by developing methods for fabricating and joining hemispherical segments of AISI-52100 ball bearing quality steel to produce 100 one inch diameter hollow balls with a wall thickness of 0.080 inches. The results of the program are presented in two basic sections: Development of Parameters and Procedures and Test Results. The first section presents the methods and procedures for fabricating and diffusion joining hemispherical components to produce hollow balls to withstand at least three consecutive compressive loads of 10,000 pounds without failure. The second section presents the results of compressive, deflection and metallurgical tests. The results show that the hollow balls, when tempered to Rc 57 + or - 1 will withstand the required load. In addition, photomicrographs show the diffusion bonded joints to be uniform and homogeneous under magnifications to 1000X. (Author)
