Abstract : The purpose of this program is to develop two oscillators, one at C-band and one at X-band which function sequentially as a transmitter and as a gated local oscillator in their respective bands. The objective for the triode development phase is to produce a triode to fulfill the oscillator requirements. By reducing the thickness of the cathode support foil in the triode from .0006 inches to .00025 inches and bonding the heater to the cathode, a reduction of heater power of nearly 30% was realized. The motion of the grid wires in the triode caused by electrostatic excitation, and the resulting frequency modulation, was reduced appreciably by including an interlaced, untensioned, damping wire at right angles to the direction of the primary grid wires. An oscillator with variable parameters was built and modified until satisfactory operation was achieved. This oscillator (oscillator DC-3) will be used to evaluate tubes having various characteristics. A fixed dual function C-band oscillator was built from the dimensions scaled from oscillator DC-3 while it was functioning satisfactorily. Evaluation of the fixed oscillator has not yet been made.
