Abstract : The original purpose of this program was a theoretical and experimental evaluation of welded junction diodes and tunnel diodes for use as mixers at 3.2 millimeters. The design of the transistorized driver portion of a 94 GHz solid state source is described. The transistor driver is designed to provide 16 watts at 290 MHz. The output frequency of the transistor driver was arrived at after comparing overall efficiency and circuit complexity. Most of the varactor multipliers for completing the entire chain to 94 GHz were designed and put into the model shop for fabrication. Balanced mixer results at 94 GHz are described using a successfully demonstrated broadband 3 dB directional coupler. Measurements on the balanced mixer are at intermediate frequencies of 200, 500, and 1000 MHz. The transducer loss is constant over this intermediate frequency range. The mixer also demonstrates good rejection of the local oscillator noise. A review is presented on the 94 GHz mixer diode development, conversion loss, and noise figure measurements. (Author)
