Abstract : The physical properties of the waters of the South China Sea are controlled by the monsoonal rainfall and currents, as well as by the geographic distribution of broad shallows about the central deep basin. In the deep water portion, warm low-salinity surface waters predominate over cooler but more saline waters from the Pacific Ocean; the seasonal variation of these three basic physical properties is generally small. In the shallow waters of the straits, gulfs, and coastal shelves, rapid turnover of the water column may occur at any time of the year and may result in wide variations. (Author)
