Abstract : The effort was both a theoretical and experimental program leading to the development of high voltage, high power switching devices which utilize a liquid metal cathode. A series of mercury tubes with plasma injection triggering were built and tested culminating with a switch capable of 100KV, 8KA, and 320MW peak operation. A discussion is presented comparing the relative merits of mercury and liquid sodium as the cathode material. Preliminary work with a liquid sodium tube is described. (Author)
