Abstract : This study was carried out to develop a reliable coating system for high temperature oxidation protection of dispersion strengthened nickel (TD-Nickel). A duplex Cr/Al system was developed which gave good protection as determined by a laboratory cyclic oxidation test and limited simulated engine tests. Process parameters are presented for efficient application of the coating. An oxidation study was carried out and data presented to contribute further understanding of the behavior of the composite system. A comprehensive investigation of coating component thicknesses was carried out and correlation made with coating lifetime and failure mechanisms. Relationships are presented relating coating lifetime with amounts of coating components. Effects of coating on mechanical properties of the base material were measured with no conclusive degradation observed in tensile, stress rupture or thermal fatigue tests.
