Abstract : This report describes the first quarter results on a program concerned with the development of a 3 dB figure, 4 pound, X-band low-noise TWT amplifier. The design approach is described along with the results of some key experiments. Noise figures of 3 to 4 dB have been achieved when focusing is by means of a high field solenoid. Several lightweight high field PM and SRPM magnet assemblies have been designed and parts ordered. Both hollow beam and solid beam tubes are being evaluated in these focusing systems. (Author)
