Abstract : Lack of success has been experienced in predicting time to failure and establishing effective replacement schedules for electronic parts. Largely, this is due to the generalizations that have been made regarding failure rates which were established for the class or category of the part under consideration. This report describes a study which was undertaken for the purpose of determining the feasibility of a method for predicting failures of electronic parts and components by measuring physical or electrical parameters associated with these parts or components while they are operating in their normal modes. As a result of the study, a procedure has been developed, which is technician-oriented, and which provides a means of predicting part failures based on measurements made during scheduled preventive maintenance periods.
