Abstract : This is the first quarterly report of a twelve-month research program being conducted to study the metastable chemical species produced in boron fueled rocket plumes. Experiments using boron slurried in kerosene and boron powder have been performed. The results of these experiments indicate that the boron powder burns more efficiently than the boron slurried in kerosene. From the observed intensities of spectral data it is concluded that for boron slurries there is a longer induction time than for boron powders, probably corresponding to the evaporation of kerosene. Major design difficulties to provide a suitable injector for a small five-pound engine using a slurried fuel have developed. A complete redesign of present injector is necessary to avoid the plugging in fuel orifices. (Author)
