Abstract : The purity of commercially available anhydrous nickel fluoride has been found to be below the stated purity of 95 percent. Most of the impurity has been found to be water. There is also some free HF and iron. Experiments with binders for the nickel fluoride electrode have shown that the fabrication technique is as critical (if not more so) as the type of binder material. Electrolyte studies have continued. Plots of (lambda sub obs + SC (1/2)) vs. concentration show that gamma-butyrolactone, and to a lesser degree, dimethylsulfoxide, are solvents for KPF6 and NaPF6 which do not show ion-pairing. Other solvents tested do show ion-pairing. Pulse discharge data of a 13.5 ampere-hour cell show the cells internal impedance to be 83.3 milliohms. This is far in excess of what can be attributed to the electrolyte and separator resistance. (Author)
