Abstract : Air Force computer requirements for memory systems and their state of the art are reviewed. The types of memory systems in the hierarchy of memories being used in computers or extensively investigated are defined and discussed insofar as possible applications are concerned. Principal characteristics such as speed, volume, and cost are presented as well as the memory system potential in relation to Air Force need. Current Air Force manufacturing methods programs under the direction of the Manufacturing Technology Division, Air Force Materilas Laboratory, significant criteria of planned programs, and selected Air Force research and development programs are also presented. Some memory requirements and objectives related to existing system programs and their potential use by the Air Force are tabulated. The subject matter is directed principally to those approaches where manufacturing technology programs are under way or where manufacturing technology may be required to fulfill the needs of new Air Force computers. This report will be used by the Air Force to determine the need for and the selection of manufacturing methods projects, and may be used by commercial firms to assess their efforts relative to Air Force planning.
