Abstract : An in-house study was conducted to determine the engineering feasibility of an assault boat coxswain trainer. Investigations were made to identify the training problem and possible training equipment which will simulate the various situations that a coxswain will encounter while in the open sea or during a complete beaching and retracting operation. Two types of trainers are proposed: (1) Beaching and Retracting Trainer which utilizes for visual simulation, the wide angle television projection system; and (2) Procedural Trainer which utilizes for visual simulation, the point light source projection system. The beaching and retracting trainer is for training a coxswain in a complete beaching and retracting operation. This trainer will include the real-world environments including the effects of boat and sea motions, and engine sound and vibrations. The procedural trainer is for training a coxswain in the familiarization and coordination of the boat controls while in the open sea. To develop the trainer, the status of the proposed systems has been summarized, and the area which requires further research is outlined. Also, the estimated cost and time involved are presented.
