Abstract : The development of an X-band solid-state source that uses a minimum number of states is summarized in this report. The high-power version of this source generates 330 mw by cascading a transistor oscillator tripler with a braodband varactor doubler and a bimode quadrupler. A lower-power version, which used the same transistor oscillator tripler as a driver, develops a minimum power output of 140 mw and is mechanically tunable from 9.7 to 9.9 GHz. The same unit has a peak power output of 250 mw. A theoretical study shows that the least complicated circuitry is required and highest efficiency is available with the hyper-abrupt diode frequency multiplier. Without the use of idler cirucits, direct multiplication may be achieved by an octupler over a broad bandwidth. However, the presently available hyper-abrupt diodes are limited to maximum output frequencies of about 5 GHz, due to cutoff frequency limitations. Therefore use of a high power octupler with an output at 10 GHz is not within the present state of the art. (Author)
