Abstract : This report describes the development of a helical monopole antenna operating over the 30-76 mc frequency range designed for aircraft installation. The experimental model developed for Phase I of this contract consisted of a circular helix with an elliptical toploading section. The helix design for Phase II has been changed from 7 turns to 10 turns. The increased turns density extended the tuning range to 24-76 mc. This provides an improved VSWR response over the 30-76 mc frequency range with a VSWR less than 2.0:1.0 over the 24-76 mc frequency band. The characteristics of the helical monopole are: Frequency (24-75 mc); Polarization (vertical); VSWR 92.0:1.0 over 24-76 mc range, 1.5:1.0 over range 30-76m); R-F Power Handling Capability (100 Watts average); Impedance (50 ohms); Efficiency (16% minimum); Isolation (45 db minimum); Bandwidth (400 kc minimum); Over-all Dimensions - height 8 inches (radome), 6 inches (antenna), Width 3.5, length 11; Weight (4 lbs.).
