Abstract : Rutile, BaTiO3, and CdS have been studied using various experimental techniques. Electroabsorption in single-crystal rutile has established that the band gap is indirect and the dichroism of the fundamental absorption edge is due to the participation of different energy phonons in the absorption of the two polarizations of the light. Negative resistance characteristics of rutile thin films and the influence of contact materials on the V-I characteristics of such films are also described. A description of the growth of high-resistivity n- and p-type cadmium sulfide crystals and the results of pulse-light analysis of contact barriers to these crystals also appears herein.
