Abstract : Improved methods for disposal of human and other wastes are required in polar regions to prevent pollution of the environment. The problem of pollution due to inadequate methods of waste disposal is more severe in polar regions because of reduced metabolic rate of microorganisms and extended survival time resulting from the low temperatures. From a discussion of waste treatment methods and their application, it is concluded that incineration provides the most suitable method for disposal of polar camp wastes. Equipment required for incineration is available commercially but has not been evaluated under polar conditions. Detail study of a total disposal system incorporating the single-incinerator concept is recommended. (Author)
