Abstract : This analysis was performed at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory as part of the developmental effort for the Blue Goose vehicle. The Blue Goose is an accurate unguided, single-stage, 15,000-pound vehicle that spins on a launcher just prior to ignition and lift off. The rocket motors are a Castor (XM33-E8 Thiokol) and four Recruits (XM-19E1 Thiokol). This analysis shows how to minimize the thrust misalignment of the auxiliary recruit motor cluster. Though the analysis is applied to a specific vehicle, it is applicable to many other guided and unguided vehicles (Athena, Strypi, Trailblazer, SWICK, etc.). Each of these employs a Castor and a Recruit cluster for first stage propulsion. If the vehicle is guided, this technique can decrease requirements of the guidance system. If unguided, the trajectory accuracy of the vehicle can be significantly increased. The analysis indicates that the net thrust misalignment angle of the geometric center lines of the Recruits can be measured and compensated to within 1 minute of arc. (Author)
