Abstract : The objective of this work is to develop reciprocal, ferrimagnetic, digital phase shifters in waveguide and TEM transmission line. The phase shifters are to operate over the frequency band of 2.9 GHz to 3.5 GHz and must be capable of high power operation. The TEM unit has been designed in strip transmission line with a ground plane spacing of 0.100. The center conductor is 0.020 to 0.069 giving an impedance of 15 ohms. Matching is accomplished by means of a two-section dielectric transformer giving a VSWR of 1.4:1.0 maximum. The ferrite toroids are of flat aspect and are contained completely between the ground planes. The toroids are operated between the demagnetized state and a state of magnetization parallel to the center conductor. The best results obtained to date are 125 degrees/db of reciprocal phase shift. The high power limit of this unit is 250 watts. Two waveguide structures have been developed using standard rectangular toroids in rectangular waveguide. One design uses a dual toroid structure mounted in the guide center with both toroids magnetized in the same direction. The maximum figure of merit obtained was 80 degrees/db with the toroids operating between the magnetized and demagnetized states. Another promising design uses two non-reciprocal bits in series with the toroids latched in opposite directions. This structure has given a maximum figure of merit of 90 degrees/db.
