Abstract : The effect of the reentry plasma environment upon the input admittance of an antenna system is studied. In particular, we ascertain to what extent simple computations based on plane wave theory yield substantially the same results that we obtain here employing a more rigourous approach. We adopt a model of a parallel plate transmission line feeding an infinitely long slot in a ground plane contiguous to an overdense plasma half-space, and we consider separately the two possible directions of polarization for the aperture electric field. It is shown that , in both cases, the input admittance is given, to a high degree of approximation, by the same expression that one obtains from an analysis of plane waves incident upon a plasma half-space. Numerical results presented in the form of curves specify quite precisely, for a wide variety of parameter values, the limits of applicability of plane wave analysis to describing the plasma-antenna interaction in a reentry environment.
