Abstract : The program to develop advanced prototype instruments for the measurement of static and dynamic film thickness, film continuity, and film pressure in potassium-lubricated journal bearings has been terminated. Because of difficulties in fabricating final versions of the film-thickness transducers, no evaluations of prototype instruments were conducted in potassium. Performance data were obtained using laboratory simulation experiments. Room-temperature simulations using metal foils were used to demonstrate the capabilities of the film-thickness-transducer design. Elevated-temperature evaluations in air or molten lead were used to examine the effects of temperature on the transducer signal. Together these experiments give promise that the prototype film-thickness transducer and ancillary instrumentation system design should have the desired performance capability. The film-pressure- transducer performance was evaluated at room temperature and elevated temperatures by direct force loading of the transducer core. With judicious choice of the material and mechanical design of the core, the experiments demonstrated the desired sensitivity and stability. (Author)
