Abstract : This report describes the use of superheterodyne techniques as applied to sweep oscillator measurement systems. The advantages of the superheterodyne system in achieving a dynamic range superior to that obtained by conventional means are clearly demonstrated. The sweep oscillator system described in this report provides a dynamic range of 70 dB as opposed to 20 or 30 dB for most sweep oscillators. The superheterodyne system requires two sweep oscillators; one to serve as the signal source, the other for the local oscillator. The two oscillators must be swept in such a way as to produce a fixed frequency IF signal. To achieve this tracking capability, an AFC loop is incorporated to maintain the desired IF offset frequency between the two oscillators. (Author)
