Abstract : The purpose of the test was to determine whether the current procurement 20-Ton Rough Terrain Crane is suitable for Army use and to provide feedback data on deficiencies and shortcomings of the production item. Carriers were operated for a combined total of 9,912 miles and crane superstructures were operated a combined total of 304 hours. At the completion of the test 22 deficiencies and 32 shortcomings remained uncorrected. Of the 22 deficiencies 1 pertained to noise level in the crane cab, 1 to safety, 1 to parts interchangeability, 1 to maintenance, and 18 to reliability. USAARENBD concluded that the deficiencies required correction; the test item is unsafe to operate until modifications have been made to reduce the noise level in the crane cab and to prevent the mud and water spun off the front wheel from obscuring the operator's vision to the rear; and the equipment manual requires revision. USAARENBD recommended that the test item be considered unsuitable for the US Army use until the deficiencies have been corrected; the test item be modified to correct the deficiencies and as many shortcomings as feasible and a modified vehicle be furnished for retest; and that the equipment manual be revised.
