Abstract : The cones considered may be multilayered with each layer composed of a different orthotropic material, and the planes of elastic symmetry may be oriented differently for each layer. The problem is assumed to be axisymmetric and to possess a conical similitude which characterizes a rather broad class of problems involving long (or infinite) cones. The governing differential equations are formulated by using the linear theory of elasticity and solved by the method of finite differences. A computer program has been written which can efficiently solve many problems in one sequence, thus being especially useful for parametric studies. A number of solutions are given in this report. For one of these, the socalled dixie cup cone, the dependence of the stresses on the material layup angle is illustrated. For another, a cone of graphite material, it is shown that the method of treating a slender cone as an equivalent cylinder may lead to substantial errors.
