Abstract : The technology necessary for the intelligent application of refractory alloys to regeneratively cooled, liquid-propellant rocket engines has been heretofore seriously neglected. To date, the use of refractory alloys in such engines has been minimal because more conventional materials have been adequate, and because of the difficulties associated with the use of refractory metals. However, the next steps to increase the thrust and specific impulse of these engines will result in materials requirements, particularly in the thrust chamber, which reasonably can be met only with the refractory alloys. Designs, which demand the use of refractory alloys, are already on the drawing board, but the refractory alloys have not been tested to an extent that would allow the application of these metals with full confidence. It is necessary that tests be conducted to verify the anticipated advantages of refractory metal alloys over conventional high-temperature alloys. In addition to verifying the advantages of the refractory alloys, tests are needed to study specific characteristics of these alloys which will determine the degree of success which can be expected in high-performance rocket engine applications.
