Abstract : This study was conducted to determine the ability of 12 lightweight membranes to waterproof the subgrade beneath solid planks of AM1 landing mat. A test section 24 ft wide and 110 ft long was constructed under the protection of a hangar to provide the conditions required for accurately controlled comparative traffic tests. One half of the test section consisted of a heavy clay (CH) subgrade, and the other half consisted of a fine, silty sand (SM) subgrade. In the field, 200 coverages were applied to the test lane with a singlewheel load of 25,000 lb (at a 250-psi inflation pressure). In the laboratory, the weight, breaking and tearing strengths, elongation, and resistance of the membrane to flame, heat, fuel spillage, and weathering were determined. The traffic tests indicated that membrane materials such as the T16, Herculite 3-ply, Griffolyn No. 105, Celtex 40 mil, and polyethlene 30 mil waterproofed both sand (SM) and clay (CH) subgrades beneath the AM1 landing mat for 200 coverages.
