Abstract : This report discusses the numerical results from four difference codes (AFTON, FLU, OIL, and PIC) for two initial value problems involving the geometry of a surface burst. The problem geometry, constitutive relation, and initial zoning were specified by the author, and hydrodynamic Eulerian calculations were performed by the companies responsible for the development of each code. The results show significant inconsistencies in peak pressure and velocity attenuation curves, pressure and particle velocity spatial profiles, and time of arrival plots. The general conclusion is that the inconsistencies can be traced to the handling of the numerics, primarily rezoning procedures. The degree of the inconsistencies indicate that numerical errors in many current state of the art high pressure Eulerian calculations may be on the order of a factor of 2 or more. (Author)
