Abstract : This report describes progress made during the second year of a three-year program, the purpose of which was to develop methods, equipment, and techniques for the accurate testing of thin gage materials. Work in the first two years has been directed to solution of the problems encountered in tensile tests of foils between 0.001 inch and 0.015 inch, and between -320 and 5000 F. The equipment designed and built for tensile testing in the first year provided solutions to the problems of load measurement, vacuum environment, specimen design and preparation, specimen gripping, and temperature provision and control to 4000 F. Completion of the evaluation of the 4000 F system and upgrading of the capability to 5000 F has been accomplished, but adequate evaluation of the 5000 F system was not possible by the end of the second year. The major accomplishment has been to analyze strain measuring systems leading to a high-temperature extensometer that has an accuracy of approximately 50 microinches/inch yet can be used to the fracture of foil specimens. Detailed testing of this extensometer up to 2600 F shows that the device works simply and reproducibly. Most foil material is supplied in coils, so that there tends to be a slight curvature to such foil specimens. A new specimen design has been developed to make accurate elastic modulus determinations possible on such material. Standards for tensile testing of foils are recommended.
