Abstract : A theoretical and experimental study of a cylinder-based torsional pendulum absorber and a theoretical study of a spherical-based system is presented. The energy dissipated in the cylindrical system is measured experimentally and compared to the predicted values. The storage and loss modulus of the viscoelastic material was determined experimentally. Low damping properties of the viscoelastic tape limited the pendulum systems so that they were effective only near their resonant frequencies. Experimental results were generally within the accuracy of most complex data that are available for damping materials. An analytical study of a high damping material shows that these pendulum systems would be effective near and above resonance. (Author)
