Abstract : A portable, modular 37,500 joule electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generator was developed in-house by the Air Force Special Weapons Center. This generator is used for on-site EMP vulnerability testing of hardened weapon systems. The generator can operate over a 1-kv to 75-kv voltage range, a 0.05-j to 37.5 kj energy range, and a 1-kHz to 150-kHz frequency range. The system uses various series-parallel combinations of thirty 1-microfarad, 50-kv energy storage capacitors. Three ignitrons, in series, are used to switch the energy to a suitable inductive load. The system is designed for air-shipment and for reasonable mobility on-site. The generator can be set up and operated by one man. The generator has been used in the test of two hardened weapon systems. These tests exercised the system over nearly its entire operating envelope. (Author)
