Abstract : The Social Medical Research Unit is in the forefront of British institutions dealing with epidemiological research as applied to important medical and social problems. Certainly, their major areas of interest, coronary artery disease, juvenile delinquency, and the effectiveness of medical services, are all major problems for modern medicine and modern society in general. Under Professor Morris's very vigorous and aggressive leadership they have delineated problems which go to the very fabric of modern life: diet, patterns of activity, the school system, and the organization of medical services with all its implied investment of national resources in training programs, health centers, etc. The Research Unit's approaches have much to recommend them for consideration by American institutions. Indeed, large-scale U.S. research efforts are already started in most of the above areas. It is thought, however, that in some ways the British efforts are more pointed and more carefully edited, perhaps because of the relative exiguity of resources in the UK as compared to the very large budgets of America.
