Abstract : The general development of modern, lightweight, and more temperature-resistant materials utilizing filaments, fibers, and whiskers in reinforced metals is described. A number of filamentary materials, their surface morphology, and their mechanical properties are discussed. The problems in joining the filaments and the metals which result in undesirable diffusion at too high temperatures are presented. The possibilities which exist for finding satisfactory solutions with promising component combinations or the application of interface materials with regard to their optimal temperatures are also discussed. The general progress made in the technology, the machinability, and the testing of metal composites is shown. The areas for further much-needed detailed research are emphasized.
