Abstract : The objective of this exploratory development program is to experimentally determine the operating characteristics of the 50 kva laboratory model superconducting generator which was investigated and fabricated under previous contracts. The tests will include steady-state balanced and unbalanced loads, transient-response, non-sinusoidal loads, pulsating torque from the prime mover, and quenching effects due to overcurrent, high flux density, temperature rise and vibrations. This report covers the work during the second quarter. The load control panels were assembled, wired, and tested; the layout and wiring diagrams for the resistor, reactor and capacitor banks for the balanced three-phase loads and the unbalanced three-phase loads were completed; the resistor banks were assembled, wired and connected to the load control panels; and the generator was disassembled to locate and repair a vacuum leak, to locate and repair an intermittent open and partial short in the armature windings, and to check the highest safe shaft speed.
