Abstract : Charged particle activation analysis has been performed on carbon, nitrogen and oxygen impurities in surfaces of beryllium, molybdenum, and tungsten using selected deuteron energies to 2.7 MeV. Deuteron beams collimated down to 0.1 inch diameter were used to bombard samples housed in a precision alignment system under vacuum conditions of 10 to the 7th power torr. Positron activity resulting from the presence of impurities was counted and stored as a complex decay curve which was subsequently analyzed by a complex decay curve computer code which compared results against standards and produced PPM values for each run. Good reproducibility and sensitivity was obtained.
