Abstract : The present report covers investigations carried out with organic reaction systems in the neat state and compares the results with those obtained in the presence of solvents. The reaction most extensively studied was the transacylation taking place between substituted amides (e.g. acetanilide, or benzanilide) on the one hand, and mono- or dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, on the other, both in the presence and absence of Lewis or Bronsted acid catalysts. The hydrogen bromide catalyzed reaction of compounds containing positive bromine was also studied. Evidence was obtained that these compounds can be used as sources of bromonium ions, and can give ring-bromination reactions on phenol or anisol.
