Abstract : The overall purpose of the program was to study the emission and absorption characteristics of organic compounds containing nitrogen or phosphorus. The excitation methods included the use of rf plasma and hollow cathode discharge lamps. Results showed that using the hallow cathode, organic nitrogen compounds could be excited to give characteristic emission spectra. The absorption by phosphorus compounds was found to be not reproducible. Experimental conditions are being investigated. Studies using an rf plasma indicate that the molecules are decomposed on introduction into the plasma. Alternate methods of complying the molecules and the plasma are being explored. (Author)
