Abstract : Recent anatomical and physiological research has shown that impulses from the brain influence transmission along sensory pathways but the function of this feedback is unknown. The aim of the investigations under the contract is to determine whether conditioning changes the flow of information from sense organs to the higher centers in the brain. Two lines of experiments are carried out on monkeys: (1) Before and after section of the pyramidal tracts the monkeys are trained to perform a temperature and a kinesthetic discrimination task tied together in an operant conditioning procedure. A digital data processing system is used to describe the monkeys' performance and a general purpose computer analyzes the material. (2) Action potentials of single neurons in the lateral geniculate body are recorded while the monkeys, in an operant conditioning procedure, discriminate between light flashes with the same physical characteristics, but with different behavioral significance. Patterns of action potentials are analyzed in a laboratory computer. (Author)
