Abstract : A brief description of the terrain and climatology of Vietnam is followed by analyses of 48 cases drawn from TIROS satellite pictures. Homogeneous regions are defined, and the cloud cover within each area is characterized. A quasi-statistical analysis of the cloud characteristics, the direction and speed of the gradient level flow, and the air mass stability was performed for each region and each season. Based on the results from these analyses, normal satellite observed cloud patterns for the Northeast and Southwest Monsoon seasons were prepared for the synoptic scale and for selected mesoscale features. Operational procedures are presented for using identifiable mesoscale features to geographically locate satellite pictures and to plan field operations. A hypothetical mission is assumed and ways in which the satellite data can be used to aid in its planning and implementation are discussed. Relationships between ambient weather conditions and satellite observed cloud patterns are described. An example of the usefulness of satellite data for predictions was tested using a one month sample of Nimbus II data. The test suggests that a relationship between the trough position and the onset of a Southwest Monsoon surge (increase in cloudiness) does exist; however, a more complete analysis, using a larger data sample, will be required before a definite relationship can be established.
