Abstract : This program was directed toward the study and investigation of methods offering promise of substantially increasing the efficiency of O-type traveling-wave tubes. The program was centered at X-band using a coupled cavity circuit as a slow wave structure at power levels of several kilowatts in the pulsed operation condition. These X-band tubes were solenoid focused devices. Emphasis was placed on methods to resynchronize the circuit wave with the beam modulation at large signal levels. Voltage jump, velocity step taper, and combinations of these two methods were studied in detail. Efficiency improvements were demonstrated with these methods. These resynchronization techniques have resulted in efficiencies of approximately 62% with collector depression and 53% efficiency with the collector grounded. This compares to 40% depressed collector efficiency and 26% efficiency with a grounded collector of the same type of tube without resynchronization techniques. (Author)
