Abstract : Molten glass has been evaluated as a heat-treatment medium for a variety of aerospace alloys. A 30-inch cube working volume furnace was designed and built. Three glass systems were developed to cover the temperature range 1600 F to 2000 F. Compatibility of the molten glasses with H-11 steel, 410 stainless steel, Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V alloy, Rene 41 nickel base alloy and TZM molybdenum was determined by metallographic examination and mechanical property determination including tensile, fatigue, notch tensile, and bend tests. A water soluble borate base glass originally developed for processing Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V alloy at 1600-1700 F was further evaluated for a variety of other alloys including low alloy, stainless, and high speed steels, titanium alloys, nickel base alloys, and molybdenum over the temperature range 1500-2400 F. The water soluble borate glass was determined to be suitable for heat-treating low alloy steels, tool steels, stainless steels, and molybdenum. The glass provided excellent surface protection for these materials with little to no oxidation, no decarburization or other surface attack or defects, and mechanical properties comparable to those produced by conventional heat-treatment. In addition, very little distortion was observed on relatively complicated parts. Although the borate glass was satisfactory for solution treatment of Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V titanium alloy, surface contamination was encountered in solution treatment of Ti-6Al-4V and other titanium alloys. The borate glass was not suitable for solution treating Rene 41 due to intergranular attack.
