Abstract : The purpose of this project was to evaluate adhesion properties of certain primer and painting systems on freshly galvanized steel. Adhesion failures of vinyl paint on galvanized surfaces, particularly loran towers, has become a problem for paint maintenance. This report covers the evaluation of several primer and painting systems, selected as possible replacements to achieve improved adhesion properties. The report describes the materials and test methods used and the adhesion rating guide devised to rate the various painting systems. Based on the tests conducted, three painting systems were found to be superior to the others tested in adhesion to galvanized steel. (Author)
