Abstract : Deviation in the Compton effect due to finite binding energy of atomic electrons was experimentally determined for K-shell electrons of tantalum, gold and uranium. The differential cross section d sigma sub k for scattering of 662 keV photons by K-shell electrons was compared with the Klein-Nishina cross section d sigma sub F for scattering by free electrons. The behavior of the cross section ratio d sigma sub K/d sigma sub F was determined for scattering angles varying from 20 degrees to 70 degrees. Results showed that the cross section ratio approaches zero as the photon scattering angle decreases to zero and that the differential cross section d sigma sub K varies inversely with Z at small scattering angles.
