Abstract : This report describes the development of TEM junction circulators having very thin center conductors and ground planes for the frequency bands 1 to 2 GHz and 2 to 4 GHz. It is pointed out that the achievement of such designs (for very thin center conductors and ground planes) is a necessary prelude to constructing external return path latching circulators, since very thin conductors are necessary to minimize eddy current losses during switching. Problems of matching these junctions are treated in some detail. In the 1- to 2-GHz band a design is achieved having a minimum isolation of 17 db and a maximum insertion loss of 0.8 db over the band. In the 2- to 4-GHz band a minimum isolation of 18 db and a maximum insertion loss of 0.4 db are achieved. Two waveguide deivce designs are described in the 8.2- to 12.4-GHz region. These device designs are different in that one has a toroidal shape ferrite geometry completely enclosed in the microwave region and the other design has a toroidal return path external to the microwave region. The latter of these designs presented an isolation greater than 20 db and an insertion loss less than 0.5 db from 9.5 to 12.4 GHz. Switching time is 4 microseconds and switching energy is 500 microjoules. The internal return path configuration presents good microwave performance over a more limited band, but moding problems are present at the higher frequencies. (Author)
