Abstract : The object of this program was to develop integrated broadband video detectors. These detectors demonstrate significant improvements in sensitivity-power handling characteristics as compared to presently available units. Operating frequencies are in excess of octave bands, and the complete detector package is capable of operation with at least 2 MHz of video bandwidth. The approach was based on a hybrid diode concept which utilized a combination of a high sensitivity video detector and a protective junction together with a mechanically integrated video preamplifier. The technical aspects of the program were divided into several major areas. These program phases included diode fabrication and evaluation of both the high sensitivity portion of the hybrid detector and the protective elements. In corporation of optimized semiconductors into the hybrid form factor constituted another significant development effort. Following the development of hybrid diode, the optimum rf mount was developed including appropriate impedance matching structures. In addition, a three-stage, all solid state video preamplifier was designed, developed, and incorporated into the rf mount. The final phase of this effort was devoted to the evaluation and characterization of the broadband integrated video detector. (Author)
